The Revenge of the Cats

A few years ago, people posted photos of “Things I put on my cat”. Like the greeting card below.

But now, the cats have taken revenge.

They wrote a whole book of poems about things they could pee on. I understand they are indeed very opinionated about being ‘pissed’.

Dreaming about shoes

Today, I played around with customizing New Balance running shoes. I had some ideas about all black ones, but then I got inspired by the customizations of others. Now, I am dreaming of these….. (dreaming because they are quite expensive, but 12% cash back and $15 off with ebates).

Strawberry Rhubarb Cranberry Quinoa Cake (GF)

Tropical storm Bill rained out the first day of summer and Father’s day this year. Like in pour out. The temperatures dropped, and it just did not stop raining. My giant bean plants were flooded.

There was only one plan to have fun: make it a pyjamas day, light a fire and some candles, watch netflix’s Orange is the New Black, and bake a cake. The rhubarb had long been harvested, kept in the fridge for a while and finally frozen, but yesterday I bought some strawberries, and it was time for a crumble. Or something like it.  I worked without a recipe this time, but I knew what I wanted: plenty of fruit, a tasty crust, but not too much of it, and so tasty I actually eat it. I used quinoa flour and almond meal for the dough, and it tastes really great. The only thing missing? A dollop of whipped cream but I did not want to leave the house in the pouring rain.

Visiting Maine in the Summer

Maine is magical in the summer, idyllic, calm, with beautiful coastline, hiking paths, sailing, sea=kajaking, antiquing or plain relaxing. Here are a few of my favorite things to do:

And then I took a Pink Tiger home

GAP is closing stores. Their clothes have been a bit unappealing lately. Hopefully, they come out of the slump.   Remember this pink tiger?

It was a marvelous early summer day, when only half of the tourists have arrived yet, mostly from the South. I headed out to the coast. To work.

June in Maine

It has been a warm and sunny weekend. The cats like to stretch out in the sun, and you would think it must be too hot with the fur, but no, they stretch out on the most comfortable, elegant cat yoga pose, right in the sunlight and take a nap. Ah, to be a cat.

The only time they are unhappy is when I am outside, and they are not.

Indian quinoa and beluga lentils (vegan)

Lately, I have been playing around with flavors, that is flavors components mostly adopted from Indian cooking. Indian cooking is very complex so I try to break it down into components or combinations of some flavors that work very well together. One of my favorites are nutty, roasted black mustard seeds with fresh curry leaves, a bit of olive oil, garam masala, turmeric, cardamom and a hint of cinnamon. Recently, I use this with vegetable broth to cook quinoa and beluga lentils in one pot. After 25 min, the most perfectly flavored quinoa lentils were ready that are perfect hot, cold, as sides, as salad, or a huge pile for a picnic. This recipe is a keeper.

Nutrients for the mind and soul

June started off with a return to rain and the coldest temperatures for Maine on record. This week the weather cannot decide between rain, sun or humidity. But it is summer, so that’s good.
This time of the year I am open to be inspired, by recipes, ideas, food….. as if summer is always a time to sit back, relax, inhale new nutrients of the mind and soul.
  • I am thinking about more decorative hiding places for my fitbit. Torchy Burch is a bit expensive. When will J.Crew pick up on this?

Summer entertainment

Last week I thought "We had one month this year --- to go from "too cold to be outside" to "too hot to be outside"... ". It was hot and humid for almost 2 weeks and felt like being in the middle of summer. No complaints (after a long harsh winter in the Northeast, there are no complaints). But the temperatures dropped by 20 degrees this weekend and it is rather chilly and rainy. The farmers will clap their hands.

This weekend I tried to figure out how to get Live Writer, the convenient blogging tool from Microsoft, to talk to the Google Blogger platform again. Some googling revealed that this seems to be a permanent problem for now, because Google updated their authentication protocols and Live Writer has not. There is a workaround using Microsoft's Live Mail (part of Windows Essentials), composing the blog in Live Writer, including photos, and copy and pasting the post to an email (in Live Mail) to post via email and keep all (or almost all) of the formatting and photos without having to manually compose a post in Blogger. (More on this technique, here). It does work --- but downloading Windows Essential took HOURS. I am not exaggerating. I rebooted my system a few times, but it just took forever (12h!). At least, now it works.

It's June! Hard to believe that the year is almost half over, and that we are rapidly approaching the longest day of the year!
